Does meditation work for you?
Posted in Meditation on 05/12/2010 10:55 am by HolisticLivingI have extreme anxiety. And I mean EXTREME. I am constantly stressed and anxious when in reality, I have nothing to be anxious or stressed about. My mind is basically always on a mission to discover a problem I need to be focusing on and worried about. And my mind will ALWAYS suceed. I do consume large amounts of caffeine daily, which I know contributes to anxiety and I plan on cutting back on that. I want to be calm without taking medication.
So, I figured I could always try meditation. I did a few practice breathing techniques a few minutes ago, and I found that the longer I was doing it, the deeper my breaths would get, and the more “tranquil” I guess is the word, I felt. My question is: Do you practice meditation daily? Does it work for you? I have never meditated before so if you could give me a few helpful tips on achieving the most effective way to meditate, I would appreciate it greatly! If it does work for you, tell me what you feel before, during and after meditation, please. And if it doesnt work for you, please tell me why. Id really like to give this a shot! Thank you in advance for your time! =]
Also, is there music you would recommend I listen to to help me relax as well? Should I listen to it while meditating?

Breathing increases the oxygen you absorb, which can help alter the brain wave, which helps relax the body. So yes, meditation works. Its a matter of shifting you brain wave out of Beta, and into Alpha or Theta.
Just do deep equalized breathing to relax. Meditating is just taking time to relax.

Hi Kristin:
Anxiety is a very common problem with so many people around the world. You’re not alone! There are countless books and classes on this topic, so it’s not a quick thing to answer, but let me give you a helpful (hopefully) suggestion:
Meditation is actually perfect for reducing stress and anxiety. You hit the nail on the head with the idea of practicing breathing techniques. By controlling your breathing through meditation, you can control your thoughts and emotions as well. And, that will in turn reduce your level of anxiety. But here’s the real beauty of a sustained meditation practice. By getting yourself into that relaxed, anxiety-free state on a regular basis, you actually start to reprogram your mind’s response to situation which would normally cause you anxiety. What happens is you’ll be able to tap into that feeling of deep relaxation even when you’re not actively meditating.
So, the idea is to meditate everyday if possible. The more often you do it the better. You should find that your levels of anxiety begin to slowly diminish. Keep in mind that this will not be an overnight transformation. Ultimately, you need to completely change your perception of stress and anxiety. But that’s a much large topic of discussion.
Regarding your questions about music, everyone is different. Some people LOVE listening to music when they meditate, while others find it to be a distraction. What you want to find is something that is relatively simple, preferably without vocals which could distract you.
By the way, I have a blog with tips and techniques for relieving stress and anxiety that you might be interested in, so feel free to check it out at:
