Arthritis – Causes And Treatment

Arthritis includes more than one hundred different disorders characterized by swelling, pain and limited or no movement in the joints. The most common form is osteoarthritis, caused by the breakdown and loss of the cartilage in one or more joints. Because it is essentially a degenerative disease, it happens more frequently and with greater severity as people age. It occurs more frequently in men over the age of 45 and in women after the age of fifty five, mostly due to wear and tear of the joints. Other factors exacerbate osteoarthritis, including weight and diet. Psoriatic and rheumatoid arthritis are genetically transmitted and are primarily caused by severe inflammation within the joints that destroy the cartilage.

The term arthritis refers to inflammation of a joint anywhere in the body, including the spine. The condition may result from, or be associated with, various disorders including infection, degenerative disease, metabolic disturbance and tumors. Types of arthritis include ankylosing rheumatoid spondylitis, a chronic progressive disease that usually affects the spine and adjacent structures.

The symptoms of arthritis are joint pain, warmth around the joint, stiffness, which affects the person more in the morning, swelling in the joints, redness of the skin around the joint, and limited movement of the joint. There are over 100 different types of arthritis affecting an estimated 46 million adults in the United States. More than half are women and nearly two thirds are under 65 years old. Arthritis even affects children.

The two types that are going to be examined are Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis. These two types of arthritis can be crippling over time. Surgery might be necessary in extreme cases.

Surgery is necessary only in extreme cases. What is spondylolisthesis? In this condition, one vertebra slips forward or subluxates on top of another. This movement narrows the spinal canal through which the spinal cord passes. Although it can occur anywhere along the spine, it most frequently involves the slipping of the bottom lumbar vertebra over the sacrum.

A natural cure for arthritis can come in all forms. There are teas, salves, and supplements all in the name of providing relief from arthritis symptoms. By definition, a cure means to restore health or to recover from a disease. In order to recover from any type of disease, sometimes it is necessary to use all available treatment at your disposal. Let’s explore some potential arthritis cures and see if they are worth pursuing.

First of all, there are herbal teas that can be taken like ginger and nettle. What I like about herbal teas is that they are easily absorb by the body and the effect is often immediate. Ginger and nettle are herbs that reduce inflammation in the joints. They also release compounds that attack prostaglandins which are often the source of joint pain. Other herbs such as boswellia and white willow bark decreases joint pain and can be made into a tea as well. You can brew yourself a gallon of these herbs and sip on a cup of this all day.

Qigong And The Art of Slowing Down

Many of the health problems that we face in the west may be attributed to lifestyle choices. We are far too often filling our days with work and leave little time for reflection, meditation, or generally slowing down. Many eastern philosophies have long valued the art of slowing down. Americans would be wise to take note of the health benefits both physical and mental that come from this art.

There are many different ways that one can effectively slow down in Eastern philosophy. Tai Chi is very well known as a practice that emphasizes slow movements with the body as well as a meditative element. Slightly less known, but still very popular is the Chinese meditative practice called Qigong. This is an internal discipline that uses slow graceful movements (and sometimes breathing techniques) to promote the circulation of “qi” or “life force” in the human body. It is thought to enhance the practitioner’s overall health. Although it is often confused with Tai Chi or martial arts, it is actually very popular. There are 200 million people that practice Qigong and it has over 10,000 different styles.

The art of Qigong offers many different benefits. The most popular reasons that practitioners begin practicing are to gain strength or improve health, to gain skill working with qi to become a healer, and to become more connected with “Tao” or God for a more meaningful connection with nature and the universe.

The root word “Qi” in Qigong means “air” in Chinese. “Gong” means discipline or skill. The combination of the two suggests that the meaning could therefore be breath or energy skill.

Many claim that Qigong provides incredible benefits to health through stress reduction and exercise. Others take it further to suggest that a metaphysical effect results from qigong, allowing the practitioner to feel vibrations or electrical currents through “meridians” in the body. Many claim it has a powerful effect in pain reduction or elimination.

While uncertainty persists regarding some of the spiritual aspects of qigong, it is undoubtedly a great way to relieve stress and to slow down. It increases mental health and the strength of joints while allowing the practitioner a chance to focus on breathing. Proper breathing is one of the best ways to promote health and well being.

Qigong can help practitioners to learn diaphragmatic breathing, which can be very helpful in combating stress. It is also a great way to improve muscle tone because it focuses on slow movements and postures that build lean muscle. While there is still uncertainty about its scientific effect on the human body, it is widely regarded as an excellent way to stretch and warm-up to the day. It is very often practiced in large groups so it can be particularly socially conducive as well.

Qigong promotes lean muscle growth so it is best to fuel the body with plenty of lean protein. Whey protein is an excellent source to assist any practitioner of qigong because it contains 90% protein and is a byproduct of dairy so it is very easy to digest. Take a minute to slow down and you’ll be surprised by how much better you feel inside and out.

“Fat” tai chi people? Does diaphragmatic breathing cause stomach to grow?

A number of tai chi practitioners I know are incredibly skilled and strong and even though they look slim in their faces and necks, their stomachs are significantly large. And my grandfather who sung opera for decades is in great shape apart from his stomach which has a largeness that he explains as diaphragmatic development instead of fat.

Is there anything to this? Do people who do years of diaphragmatic breathing or qigong sometimes develop large stomachs even when they eat light and exercise regularly?

What acupuncture school(s) provides the best/most thorough education?

I’m in the process of applying to acupuncture schools, and am getting a little spun. I’m searching for an accredited school with strong curriculum that is rooted in traditional chinese medicine (including herbs, tui na, qigong, etc.), and that is taught by qualified faculty (who graduated from schools other than the one at which they’re currently teaching). I’m open to schools anywhere in the U.S. Any feedback (positive or negative) about any school would be greatly appreciated.

Hands-On Healing – as Effective as Reiki or Qigong?

Does the simple act of “laying on of hands” deliver the same benefits as do either Reiki or Qigong? Perhaps the real question is along the lines of whether or not the simply act tself is powerful enough to bring about true healing, or must it be applied methodically in order to be “routed” properly to the correct organs, systems, and so forth?

Maybe it takes years of training and focus to heal someone effectively in this manner?

Only serious answers, please. This information is for research, and will be given to a European novelist who plans to include such details in a story. Thank you.

Looking for Qigong doctor to help friend’s father with cancer.?

I have a friend in California near San Francisco, who has a father that has cancer that isn’t responding to Chemotherapy. I would like to find a Qigong doctor who I can refer him to that has experience in healing cancer. I ‘m not talking about just self meditation, herbal remedies, or holistic hospice type management. I am talking about a live in or patient live in therapy. Complete management.
For example, 12 years ago I knew someone with lymph cancer and it was terminal. He went to Thailand and spent 4 months there. When he came back, the doctors said he was cured and they couldn’t understand how. But this is what I am looking for. Or something with this type of approach. If the person is in California that would be great but SE Asia might be OK too. He is Vietnamese. Anyone knowing such contacts would be much appreciated. Please no commercial programs or treatments.

If you can only get one of Dr. Yang’s Qigong dvds or books to get started in Qigong which one would be best?

I want to learn Qigong and on my research Dr. Yang’s work looks to be the most knowledgeable and helpful material for learning it. The other more western approaches seem superficial. However I don’t have the means to go out and buy a library on the subject. I can only get one thing at a time so I want to be sure I don’t get something unhelpful. Keep in mind I’m a complete novice but a quick study (not necessarily a quick doer).

Qigong and illness. help?

iam fairly good at Qigong. I actually believe its the reason i can still function despite having autoimmune desease. Im good at “martial qigong” which has health benefits, but do any of you guys know of “medical” qigong exercises for Auto-immune desease.

Also. from my research. Rhematoid conditions are causes by slow moving “qi” ,….so basically my cells arent ciruclating properly. Im fairly knowledgable about Herbolgy and the harmful effects of modern medicine. Ive successfully treated other problems, but this is complex. Lupus, and other AI deseases attack the entire body. any advice would be appreciated.
